Christmas is a time to celebrate – the end of another hopefully well-lived year, a few precious holidays, time with family and friends, for relaxation and fun.
But Christmas may also be a time for reflection and rebirth. Traditionally at Christmas we celebrate the birth of a human hero of love, compassion and courage. But, no matter what our religion or whether we even have one, Christmas may remind us that we can all embrace this beautiful truth: that each of us can be a hero of love, compassion and courage.
Our soul-less times urgently call for each of us to reflect on the true potential and purpose of our human path: To make a strong, unwavering commitment to the unifying principles that all main religions and all humanists share: compassion, forgiveness, tolerance; to move beyond what makes us small, beyond our preoccupations with the external, materialistic aspects of life - and return to who we really are: heroes of the heart, guardians of truth and reason, and avatars of compassion and kindness. Christmas reminds us to take ethical justice and responsibility towards our planet and our human race seriously. That we will carry the torch with the true light of Christmas through each of our days and nights, all through the year, and in any moment only stop to reflect: What would love do?
